For the Love of Pillows!

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Our CEO and fellow Bedding Snob heard this poem by Pat Schneider on NPR recently. The moral? A soft and scrumptious luxury pillow is one of life’s greatest comforts and simplest pleasures. Here, here!

I Was Mean to You Today
by Pat Schneider

Things were difficult
and I was impatient.
You were trying to explain
why I must reorganize the files
on my computer, why
they all have to have project numbers,
why I can’t put them
where they’ve always been,
what the tax consultant said,
what you need for your report
to the Board of Directors,
and it boiled down to my files
have to be re-filed, and they
have to have titles with no more
than twelve letters to leave room
for project numbers,
and I said, Well, dammit.
And you said, Don’t talk like that.

You sounded pained
and I was mean to you.
I was bored and tired
and mad, and you were
trying hard. Later,
I went out in the rain.
I went to the mall
and bought us both really
expensive pillows. Down
pillows with 100 per cent
cotton covers, 400 thread count.
I have lusted after them for years,
ever since Mama told me
that she asked Grandma,
who was 86 and dying,
“If you could have anything
in the world, what would it be?”
and Grandma answered,
“A down pillow” and Mama
didn’t have enough money.
I bought two down pillows for us all,
to say I’m sorry.

Health Magazine gives a thumbs up to Cuddledown pillows

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Health October 2009We were delighted to learn that the October 2009 edition of Health Magazine has a fantastic mention of our 600 Fill Power European Duck Down Pillow, labeling it the best pick in their Stomach Sleeper, Natural Pillow category:

Our tester wished for a pillow that felt “soft and squishy with just enough support,” and she got what she was looking for in this model. “My head sank in, and my neck felt perfectly cushioned,” she noted. Bonus: No weird down smell.

We couldn’t agree more!

Neck Pain Be Gone!

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Legend has it that the president of Cuddledown used to have rather ferocious neck pain upon waking. He challenged himself with designing a pillow that would help to relax the tight muscles in the back of his neck. He struck gold with the introduction of the Down-Filled Neck Support Pillow.  This unique pillow has a firmer channel that gently supports the neck, while allowing one’s head to sink into downy softness.

And it seems that others are picking up on just how great this pillow is!  It is currently one of the pillows being featured on a Better TV segment highlighting great pillow picks.  Check out the video here.

Let Spring In! Part II

Monday, April 6th, 2009

You’ve done the dirty work of cleaning & have started to “springify” your bed, changing out your cozy flannels for something crisp & cool, like our very springy Daisy Percale or our pastel-hued Organic Percale Bedding.

It’s also time to pack up your heavy winter comforter & bring out a lighter one.  We offer both a blanket weight & a summer weight comforter.  I know, it can seem a little confusing because we also offer blankets.  Think of it this way, a blanket weight comforter gives you the warmth of about one light to mid-weight blanket, but with the airiness of a comforter.  A summer weight comforter would be the next level up, allowing for a tiny bit more insulation & a wee bit more “poof!” to your comforter.  If you prefer to keep the same comforter on year round, our level one weight would be your best bet.  For more information, check out our web article “How to Choose a Cuddledown Comforter.”

But be sure to air our your comforters! Hanging a comforter from an open window actually helps increase the longevity by evaporating any existing moisture among your fill – & it’s picturesque too! Not to mention it’ll leave your comforter (& your bed) smelling spring fresh!

Swapping out your pillows isn’t a bad idea either.  A good habit to get into is actually using TWO pillows per person – changing them out on alternate days.  That way while you’re using one pillow, the other is airing out, again increasing longevity by evaporating any moisture buildup.

To get you motivated to get (& keep) your room all nice & tidy, here are some lovely, inspiring bedroom pics:

Let Spring In! Part I

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
From the Conde Nast photo archives

From the Conde Nast photo archives

A breath of fresh air – that’s what spring feels like to me.  After months & months (& months – I am in Maine, after all) of being housebound & looking at snowbanks taller than me, it’s invigorating to finally see COLOR.  Right now, I can look out the office window & actually see the teeniest green buds on some bushes in the parking lot.  Dreamy!

With all of this new life about to bloom, I’ve got one thing on my mind: SPRING CLEANING. Time to throw open the windows & let the house breathe!  Time to organize! Declutter! Purge! While every room could benefit from a top-to-bottom scrubbing, I’m going to focus on the bedroom.  There is just nothing as soothing as sleeping in a freshly cleaned & organized room.

I’m no organizer by trade, so I thought it best to look to the professionals about how to get such a daunting job done.  This list is actually from the TheFind.com blog archives, but I think it still applies.  I’ve always found that it’s a good idea to have a map for doing such a big cleaning job.

Once you’ve completed all of the grunt work of dusting, vacuuming, & Versailles Toile Voilepurging, it’s time to put it all back together, hopefully in a neat & tidy package.  When redressing your bed, think about warm-weather fabrics like seersucker or Italian linen. Voile, too, is perfect for warm weather sleeping & is especially appreciated by those who sleep hot.  As an added bonus, voile is so elegant that it can add a sophisticated note to any room.

But it doesn’t end there!  Next up: comforters & pillows – tune in next week for some helpful hints.

Love not war… no more pillow fights! Learn to love your pillow – Part III

Monday, March 9th, 2009

So we’ve covered what kind of sleeper you are & what your fill options are. But what should your pillow be covered in?

As far as tickings – the material that covers the fill – you’ll find that most are made out of cotton for breathability. But cotton comes in many flavors from unbleached, undyed, & organic to Pima & long staple Egyptian. Not to mention that there are numerous weaves like cambric, sateen, & dobby! While ticking fiber can be important depending on what your eco-friendly ethics might be & the type of air permeability you might want, weaves are often more for appearance & hand (or feel) than functionality.

Of course, once you do make such an important purchase, you’re going to want to preserve it! Be sure to always use pillow protectors – whether they be dust mite proof (highly recommended to keep those morning sniffles & burning eyes away, especially for the highly allergic) or simply cotton, which will get the job done. Pillow protectors will increase the life span of your pillow quite a bit. A quick word about dust mites: these little buggers can wreck havoc on the unsuspecting sleeper, so ridding your home of them benefits everyone.

Are you ready? What are you waiting for? Off on the hunt with you! May each of you find that much-sought-after pillow perfection!

Love not war… no more pillow fights! Learn to love your pillow – Part II

Friday, March 6th, 2009

In my last post, we talked about sleep positions & how they effect your pillow choices.  Once you’ve determined what type of sleeper you are and the general kind of pillow you should be looking for, next it’s time for some fun! There are oodles of choices out there from ticking material to fill. For those who prefer a poofy, cushy pillow, down is the favored choice. There are lots of misconceptions about down & allergies. The fact is that few people are actually allergic to down, but rather the particles left on the down when it’s not properly cleaned. Our down goes through a rigorous cleaning process to remove all of the allergens, leaving you with a fluffy, cloud-like, sneeze-free sleeping experience. So down is probably one of the more popular choices, especially as there’s a down pillow for every type of sleeper – stomach, back, or side.

But it’s not the only choice! People who truly feel that they are sensitive to down, may opt for a down alternative fill. Our down alternative is cushy, soft, & lofts similarly to down. It’s the next best thing to real down. Keep in mind, however, that as a natural fiber, down has an inherent resilience & is more likely to last longer before needing to be replaced.

Cotton is one of the most popular fibers for…just about everything! And pillows are no exception. They can be found in bleached or unbleached varieties, depending on your personal taste, and are often ALL cotton, right down to the thread. Cotton pillows tend to be firmer & less squashy than down, but cotton enthusiasts swear by them.

Wool pillows have heaps of naturally occurring positive attributes. They are inherently anti-microbial & anti-fungal, wick away perspiration,& are naturally temperature-regulating. A rather amazing fiber. However, like cotton pillows, wool pillows tend to be on the firm side and aren’t terribly malleable. Both wool & cotton pillow are perhaps best for side or back sleepers.

Then there are the foam pillows: (natural) latex & memory foam. Natural latex foam is derived from rubber trees, while memory foam is a synthetic material, originally developed for NASA for use in space craft. Like cotton & wool, both of these foams would be best suited for those who sleep on their side or back.

Natural latex pillows offer incredible support, with a little bit of give. Because it’s a porous material, latex has some spring do it (as opposed to memory foam, which is very dense & adjusts immediately to your head – with very little bounce). Like wool, latex is naturally anti-microbial & anti-fungal & is also fairly breathable. As an added bonus, it’s got a bit more squish to it than a wool or cotton pillow.

Memory foam is technical, in vogue, & has a loyal following. It conforms to your shape, cradling your head & easing any pressure points. To take it a up a notch, you can mix a memory foam insert with a down-filled outer ticking (a la our Down Covered Memory Foam Pillow), creating a heavenly match of technical & natural materials.

Okay, so now you’ve determined what type of sleeper you are &  what your pillow fill should be. You’re nearly done! Tune in next Wednesday for the exciting conclusion of how to pick your perfect pillow!
