Off to College!

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Can’t live with ‘em…can’t live without ‘em!

So, what does a Cuddledown mom send with her kiddo to college for his bed? OK, I admit it, maybe I went a little overboard; a featherbed (‘cause college mattresses are flat and gross) with a nice waterproof mattress pad over that – just in case… and it will protect him from dorm room “ickys” (like dust mites-and with recent outbreaks of bed bugs – a little extra protection doesn’t hurt), a nice set of sheets (not only because the aquamarine was on sale…a good boy color…but also because, with deep 18” pockets,  they’ll fit over all the other stuff and will wash easily…if he washes them! I hope he washes them), a down comforter in “blanket warmth” (he’s a heater so a down blanket, being lighter, is perfect, and aren’t dorm rooms usually warm?)  etc…etc…etc… Yes, there’s more but I’m already embarrassing myself!  Or am I?  He, too, thought I was nuts until all the kids on his floor wanted to test out his bed and (if I may just brag) who’s the most envied on his floor?  My guy!  So, I ask you…what can Mom do to help her college kid get off to a good start?  And make sure they sleep well…if they sleep?  Maybe I didn’t go overboard after all!  I’m going to be proud of myself until the first girlfriend comes around, right?  What kind of bedding did you send your kids/grandkids off to school with?

Greener pastures, greener beds!

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

In a recent post on ModernSerenity.com about ridding your bed of harmful chemicals, Cuddledown is praised for our line of safe and healthy eco-friendly products. Thank you to blogger and presumed fellow bedding snob Nick Andre for the recognition! Delivering the highest quality eco-friendly bedding and apparel to our customers is an important focus for us, and we set our standards high. When you see a Certified Eco-Friendly icon in our catalog or on our website, you can trust that product is Oeko-Tex certified to be free from harmful chemicals and dyes. All products submitted for Oeko-Tex review are tested exclusively in Oeko-Tex member institutes in Europe and Japan to maintain a consistent, high level of testing. If it doesn’t meet the Oeko-Tex environmental standards, it doesn’t meet ours—it’s that simple. And we make the same commitment to certified organic products—everything organic we carry meets the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS), which guarantees it’s made from at least 95% organic material and creates a minimal impact on the environment. One of my favorite new bedding collections this season is our Embroidered Dog Sheet Sets—they’re Oeko-Tex and GOTS certified, and are oh so soft and playful. Not to mention that you won’t find this design anywhere else.

Do you dream in green?

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Spring has sprung and all things in nature are going green. Why not help the green outside by going green inside your bedroom? Good idea! Now you’re pumped about helping the planet while you sleep. But, what if the bedding you buy is a green wash? How do you know that you’re not just another victim of an enviro-hoax? And how much “green” does it cost to go green? Well, here’s a little crash course on my new favorite color.

In your quest for bedding a la green, first look for certifications that other people have actually heard of. Cuddledown uses Oeko-Tex to certify their eco-friendly products and GOTS to certify their organic products.

Oeko-Tex is a European certification that tests the fabric right from the package for harmful chemicals and toxins. Now used all over the world, Oeko-Tex is very common and ensures that no matter where the fabric is from, you and your family can rest easy knowing substances that have no business being in your bedding (aka: lead, mercury, formaldehyde) aren’t. What’s also pretty great is that when you’re done with your eco-friendly/Oeko-Tex certified bedding, none of these chemicals will be released back into the environment.

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and is the most recognized textile organic certification in the world. What does it mean for a textile to be organic? GOTS ensures that no pesticides or harmful chemicals are used in the growth, manufacture, and dying processes of the fabric. It even goes so far as to make sure that the workers are treated fairly and waste is disposed of properly.

And how much extra can you expect to pay for these certifications and the peace of mind knowing that you’re taking your carbon footprint down a size? Well, if you shop Cuddledown… nothing. All of Cuddledown’s organic and eco-friendly bedding is either priced the same or even lower than non-certified bedding. So next time you shop bedding… why not shop a shade of green?

Visit Cuddledown to learn more about GOTS and Oeko-Tex.

DIY: Spice up your pillowcases

His & Hers Stenciled Pillowcases

While perusing my many daily blog reads, I happened upon this fabulous idea.   Monogramming is always an elegant option to personalizing one’s bedding, but the hands-on approach to this Do It Yourself project opens up a whole realm of possibilities.  Stenciling a friend’s name onto a pair of simple, cotton pillowcases could make for a lovely, inexpensive gift.  Or you can give some of your older, more boring pillowcases a little face lift with fun graphics or cute sayings.  With just a little creativity & a few tools, you can have fun and dress up your bed.

For the step-by-step how-to, pop on over to Apartment Theraphy.  Happy stenciling!

Let Spring In! Part II

Monday, April 6th, 2009

You’ve done the dirty work of cleaning & have started to “springify” your bed, changing out your cozy flannels for something crisp & cool, like our very springy Daisy Percale or our pastel-hued Organic Percale Bedding.

It’s also time to pack up your heavy winter comforter & bring out a lighter one.  We offer both a blanket weight & a summer weight comforter.  I know, it can seem a little confusing because we also offer blankets.  Think of it this way, a blanket weight comforter gives you the warmth of about one light to mid-weight blanket, but with the airiness of a comforter.  A summer weight comforter would be the next level up, allowing for a tiny bit more insulation & a wee bit more “poof!” to your comforter.  If you prefer to keep the same comforter on year round, our level one weight would be your best bet.  For more information, check out our web article “How to Choose a Cuddledown Comforter.”

But be sure to air our your comforters! Hanging a comforter from an open window actually helps increase the longevity by evaporating any existing moisture among your fill – & it’s picturesque too! Not to mention it’ll leave your comforter (& your bed) smelling spring fresh!

Swapping out your pillows isn’t a bad idea either.  A good habit to get into is actually using TWO pillows per person – changing them out on alternate days.  That way while you’re using one pillow, the other is airing out, again increasing longevity by evaporating any moisture buildup.

To get you motivated to get (& keep) your room all nice & tidy, here are some lovely, inspiring bedroom pics:

Let Spring In! Part I

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
From the Conde Nast photo archives

From the Conde Nast photo archives

A breath of fresh air – that’s what spring feels like to me.  After months & months (& months – I am in Maine, after all) of being housebound & looking at snowbanks taller than me, it’s invigorating to finally see COLOR.  Right now, I can look out the office window & actually see the teeniest green buds on some bushes in the parking lot.  Dreamy!

With all of this new life about to bloom, I’ve got one thing on my mind: SPRING CLEANING. Time to throw open the windows & let the house breathe!  Time to organize! Declutter! Purge! While every room could benefit from a top-to-bottom scrubbing, I’m going to focus on the bedroom.  There is just nothing as soothing as sleeping in a freshly cleaned & organized room.

I’m no organizer by trade, so I thought it best to look to the professionals about how to get such a daunting job done.  This list is actually from the TheFind.com blog archives, but I think it still applies.  I’ve always found that it’s a good idea to have a map for doing such a big cleaning job.

Once you’ve completed all of the grunt work of dusting, vacuuming, & Versailles Toile Voilepurging, it’s time to put it all back together, hopefully in a neat & tidy package.  When redressing your bed, think about warm-weather fabrics like seersucker or Italian linen. Voile, too, is perfect for warm weather sleeping & is especially appreciated by those who sleep hot.  As an added bonus, voile is so elegant that it can add a sophisticated note to any room.

But it doesn’t end there!  Next up: comforters & pillows – tune in next week for some helpful hints.
